A rare moment when a currently hooked TV show reminds me of Verdi's opera--
In Reign 3x06, Mary says that "Generals are in a holding pattern until a new regent is elected." With the death of King Francis, France lost their ruler. His younger brother is supposed to ascend to the throne but needs a regent due to his minority. Since a regent has not been elected yet, the French troops sent to Scotland can neither progress nor retreat. They are in a "holding pattern."
The term is used to explain a harmonic pattern frequently found in Italian opera: "holding pattern" in Verdi's opera means harmonic stasis where tonic and dominant harmony oscillates. There is no progressive quality as harmonic motion is sustained.
